The Beginning of the James Solomon Russell – Saint Paul’s College Museum & Archives

Honoring Two Legacies, United by One Vision

Honoring Two Legacies, United by One Vision

In 2015, two community groups—the James Solomon Russell Commemoration Committee (established in 2009) and the Saint Paul’s College Museum Committee (formed after the college’s closing in 2013) joined forces to preserve the shared legacy of education, faith, and leadership in Southside Virginia.

After a year of collaboration, both committees realized their missions aligned and that their combined efforts would make a greater impact. Together, they formed what is now the James Solomon Russell – Saint Paul’s College Museum & Archives, a unified organization dedicated to celebrating history, preserving archives, and inspiring future generations.

Building the Foundation

Building the Foundation

The newly established organization officially approved its name, mission, and leadership team, electing officers:

James Grimstead – Chairman, Bobby Conner – Vice Chairman, Teya Whitehead – Secretary, and Regna Gordon – Treasurer.

Soon after, the team opened a postal box and bank account, solidifying its foundation. Their first major objective:

“Prepare the museum for opening to the general public.”

With that goal, the group drafted a logo, developed a museum floorplan, and organized committees to guide the work of eleven new members.

Community Support and Official Recognition

The Brunswick County Board of Supervisors played a vital role by providing operating space and utilities, ensuring the museum had a physical home.

Soon after, the organization secured both its Virginia state nonprofit corporation status and federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt designation, marking a major milestone in its journey.

These accomplishments paved the way for the museum’s first open house, which welcomed alumni, supporters, and members of the public to celebrate this shared legacy.

Looking Ahead – Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future

With these foundational achievements in place, the Museum & Archives continues to grow and evolve. We are preparing for a grand opening celebration and expanding our programs to engage the community, educate visitors, and honor the enduring spirit of Saint Paul’s College and Reverend James Solomon Russell.
